Strategic Market Radar from Q2 2022

"Prepare for the recession and set financial planning to worst case scenario for the next 1-2 years!" That was my core message to OEMs, tier-1 suppliers and logistics service providers at the smart factory day of the Automobil Industrie magazin in May 2022. The quarter report from Q2 was the start of the Live Expert Talk series with 600 participants in 5 events in just 8 weeks before summer break. This videos comes up with a series of task force actions. Club members took proactive actions.

OEM: "Is there any forwarder out there?"

"Automotive OEMs are running out of willing logistics service providers!" This was the title of my strong frequented article in the Automobil Industrie and MM Logistik magazine on 6 June 2022. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, one price request after another has been received by the inbound transport logistics procurement departments. Two OEM tenders more than 15 years ago were probably responsible for the overall market situation in Europe. These two tenders have cemented the area freight forwarding structures and players across OEMs to this day. Club members have presentation, articles and numerous videos on this important topic.

After the all time freight rate high of the past 2 years, the recession is here. Already noticeable in FMCG and retail sector. Now it's tender season! This season can be a tough one in transportation and logistics. Although lead buyers from my club are on their way to our mindset for the new partner ecosystem, there is still the hardliner faction that focuses on just sequeezing the lemon. Are lead buyers now bringing their logistics service providers down to the pre-COVID-19 freight rate level?

Frankly speaking, somehow provocatively. But what is truth must remain truth. Over the past 15 years, procurement specialists in the automotive industry have set up RFQ models to gain savings from their logistics service providers in their inbound networks. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the semiconductor supply chain crisis have turned the transport and logistics market around. We are heading in a questionable direction in today's tender management practice. Namely, when adequate EBIT margins are no longer possible for logistics service providers despite a professional and proper RFQ evaluation. For me, the way in which industry's tenders are designed today is a major misalignment in the market. My comments in this video are by no means a one-way street. Because doing business always involves two parties: The industry customer and its logistics service providers.

From one side, European companies are coming to expand their shared service centers and production capacities. This video is something very special. It is the very first video I created with a synthetic human avatar with AI. Prof. Dr. Stefan Iskan aka Sonny C. Metrics not only makes a contribution to the warehouse robotics market in terms of content, but is in itself a demonstration of how far technology can go today. About the content: The market could hardly be more contradictory. On the one hand, automation in FMCG and e-commerce. On the other hand, even more manual processes in logistics warehouse operations. This video also features a list of 65 robotics providers.

The start-up calculation does not work!

The start-up ecosystem is designed to roar. Start-ups in the transport logistics environment wanted to show the old-school freight forwarders how to do freight forwarding the right way. In this video, I tried to write the CV of a start-up founder backwards: "I failed to destroy the road freight industry. I burned venture capital from my investors. However, my impulses made a significant contribution on . . . " Find out which approach leads to success in the club.
